APIs occupy the upstream position in the pharmaceutical industry chain and form the foundation for ensuring drug supply and meeting the public's demand for medicines. To further advance the green upgrading of the API industry and support the high-quality development of the pharmaceutical sector, the state has successively issued relevant policies in recent years, imposing strict regulation on the API industry.
In particular, the Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Green Development of the API Industry was issued this year, which sets targets that by 2025, more than 20 key green generic technologies will be breakthroughs, the substitution of green production technologies across the industry will be basically realized, an evaluation system for green factories, green industrial parks and green management standards for APIs will be established, and the emission intensity of major pollutants will be gradually reduced.
This means that under policy guidance, the dominant role of enterprises in the market will be strengthened, an effective incentive and restraint mechanism will be formed, backward production capacity will be forced to exit, and enterprises will be driven to achieve green transformation and upgrading. Therefore, for Chinese API manufacturers, whether producing bulk APIs or specialty APIs, it is necessary to follow the laws of industrial development, strengthen the competitive factors for industrial growth, adopt a global perspective in strategic layout, and enhance the API industry's capabilities in developing specialty APIs with high-efficiency processes and high value-added products.
