Introduction
Propylene glycol is scientifically named "1,2-propanediol". There is a chiral carbon atom in its molecule. The racemate is a hygroscopic viscous liquid with a slight pungent taste. It is miscible with water, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, and soluble in ether. It can be dissolved in many essential oils, but it is immiscible with petroleum ether, paraffin wax and fats and oils. It is relatively stable to heat and light, and more stable at low temperatures. Propylene glycol can be oxidized into propionaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and acetic acid at high temperatures.

Pharmacology Properties
Stability
It is relatively stable under normal conditions. It is stable to heat and light, and more stable at low temperatures. However, it can be oxidized at high temperatures to form products such as propionaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and acetic acid.
Reactivity
The hydroxyl groups in propylene glycol can participate in various chemical reactions, such as esterification, etherification, and oxidation reactions.
Applications
Food Industry
It is used as a food additive, mainly as a humectant, solvent, and stabilizer. It can help maintain the moisture content of food, improve the texture and stability of food, and is often used in products such as baked goods, candies, and dairy products.
Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
It is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products such as lotions, creams, shampoos, and conditioners. It acts as a moisturizer, solvent, and preservative, helping to keep the product in a stable state and improving the skin - feel and texture of the product.
Pharmaceutical Industry
It is used as a solvent, humectant, and carrier in the pharmaceutical industry. It can be used to dissolve drugs, improve the solubility and stability of drugs, and is often used in oral liquids, injections, and topical preparations.
Industrial Applications
It is used as an antifreeze, coolant, and lubricant in industry. It can also be used as a raw material for the production of polyester resins, polyurethanes, and other polymers.
