Indication
Skin Disorders
It is mainly used topically for the treatment of a wide range of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. These include eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and lichen planus. By reducing inflammation, it helps to relieve symptoms and promote skin healing.
Ophthalmic Conditions
In some cases, it may be used in ophthalmology for the treatment of certain inflammatory eye conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis and uveitis, where its anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce swelling and pain in the eye.
Pharmacology Properties
Pharmacological Class: It belongs to the class of topical corticosteroids, although it can also have systemic effects depending on the route of administration and absorption.
Mechanism of Action: Fluocinolone base binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm of target cells. Once bound, the complex translocates to the nucleus and regulates the transcription of specific genes. This leads to the suppression of the production of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes. As a result, it reduces inflammation, itching, redness, and swelling associated with various skin conditions. Additionally, it has some immunosuppressive effects by inhibiting the activation and function of immune cells involved in the inflammatory response.
Dosage and Administration
Topical Use
For topical application on the skin, creams, ointments, or lotions containing fluocinolone base are typically applied to the affected area 1 to 2 times a day. The amount applied depends on the size of the affected area. It should be gently rubbed into the skin until fully absorbed.
Ophthalmic Use
When used in the eyes, eye drops or ointments containing fluocinolone may be prescribed. The frequency of administration for eye drops can vary from 1 to 4 times a day depending on the severity of the condition, while ointments are usually applied 1 to 2 times a day.
